When to Switch Electric Providers

Having deregulated utilities in Texas provides a great opportunity for consumers to change electricity companies in order to get the best service and rates. Electric service providers compete for business by creating plans to keep rates low while challenging each other to

provide top quality customer service.  There’s no doubt this competition benefits consumers, but it may be difficult to know when it’s time to switch electric providers. Along with Cirro Energy, Power to Choose, Texas’ Electric Choice education program, has some tips to help you decide.

  •  The first obvious factor involves your contract. Some electric providers offer variable rate month-to-month plans with no minimum contract term. Others offer a fixed rate term of three months or more. Be sure to understand your contract and where you are in the contract term before making a move.
  • Decide if you are satisfied with your provider. Even if the answer is “yes,” you may be able to get a lower rate by switching to a different plan within the same company.
  • Look into the electric provider’s company background.  Take a moment and do some online research and check into the electric companies you are considering.  Check out the Better Business Bureau and also look to see if the company is strong financially, even backed by a Fortune 500 company.
  • Ask yourself, “Which of the electricity providers in my area offers the best variety of plans?”  Learn more about fixed, variable, and indexed electricity rates so that you can choose the electricity plan and provider that best suits your needs. A variable rate can fluctuate each month; an indexed rate is tied to a specific formula; and a fixed rate will stay the same, but requires a contract. Electric providers with a variety of plans can offer more flexibility should you need to change from one plan to another.

Top 10 Energy-Saving Tips in Texas

If you are looking for energy-saving tips in Texas, advice will typically be focused on the summer season. Summer in Texas is long and hot, and this season is promising to be even longer since summer seems to have started early. Energy saving is a year-round endeavor, so any list of energy-saving tips, in Texas or otherwise, would be remiss without some winter tips as well. Here, Cirro Energy offers some advice to help you save energy:

  1.  One of the top energy-saving tips in Texas is to raise your thermostat. Keeping it at seventy-eight degrees in the summer is the best way to conserve energy, and can reduce your electric bill significantly. When you are away from home for more than eight hours, raise it a little higher and you will see about one percent of savings for each degree you push it up. During the winter months, keep it set at sixty-eight degrees during the day, and fifty-eight at night

    to see similar savings.

  2. Use the sun to your advantage. In the summer, this means shutting the shades when the air conditioner runs; while in the winter, it means letting the light stream in by keeping them open during daylight hours.
  3. Keep it clean. Clean and replace your air conditioning and furnace filters monthly – this will cut your costs dramatically and help your system run more efficiently.
  4. Use ceiling fans. This is one of the best energy-saving tips in Texas and other hot climates in particular. Ceiling fans can cool your body and will make the room seem ten degrees cooler. The savings on your bill can be up to about twenty-five percent! Most fans have a switch to change direction, so make sure it is blowing downward in a counter-clockwise direction during the summer. In the winter, switch it clockwise to circulate warm air.
  5. Run your appliances at night. Washing machines and dishwashers can heat up the house, so running them at night, when it is cooler, can help your air conditioner work more efficiently. Similarly, you might plan your baking for cold days in the winter to help heat your house.
  6. Use cold water to wash clothing and dishes. This will save electricity by giving your water heater a break.
  7. Seal it up! Cracks around windows and doorframes can be huge energy wasters. Put weather strips around doors and window, and seal fireplaces and duct work to keep from wasting energy.
  8. Insulate! Insulate your attic, add an insulation blanket to the water heater, and insulate your pipes. This prevents loss of energy and saves you money.
  9. Not using it? Shut down the power! This goes for lights, televisions, and appliances. Unplug whatever you are not using and you will make a dent in your electric bill.
  10. Switch to CFLs. Compact fluorescent lights use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, and last longer.

If you are looking for energy-saving tips in Texas, here is one to emphasize: choose an energy company that has a variety of plans to meet your needs with reasonable rates. Electrical Safety: Childproof Your Texas Home

If you are childproofing your home, electrical safety is probably one of your utmost concerns. Of all the dangers facing a small child, electrical shock is one of the most frightening. Even though a good start in protecting little children is to install outlet covers, older kids need protection, too. In addition to childproofing, Texas energy company Cirro Energy would like to encourage you to protect your children by educating them about electrical safety.

electrical safety 300x237 Electrical Safety: Childproof Your Texas Home

Electrical Safety

The first step in teaching children about electrical safety is to educate them about electricity. Explain that electricity can travel through the body on its way to the ground, and can cause severe pain or injury. Then have your children become aware of sources of electricity in order to keep themselves safe.

  •  Keep outlets clear. Plugging too many things into one outlet can damage your electrical system or even cause a fire. Do not plug several things into one outlet or extension cord, and teach your children this electrical safety tip as well.
  • Make sure electrical cords are out of the way. Pets can chew on cords, damaging equipment and hurting themselves. In addition, people can trip on cords; cords that are tucked away are safer.
  • Never yank a cord from the wall. Always grasp the plug near the outlet instead of pulling on the cord, to avoid damaging the appliance or the outlet.
  • Keep electric items away from water. Hairdryers and other small appliances can be deadly if they fall into water, so always remember this very important part of electrical safety.
  • Reinforce the idea of adult supervision. The use of anything that involves electricity should be supervised by an adult.
  • Carry your awareness outside with you. Electrical safety is not just for the indoor environment! Kids should be taught to keep kites, water guns, and other toys away from power lines, and to look out for lines when climbing trees. A healthy respect for electrical equipment is key, and children should stay away from anything that looks relatable to electricity. This includes not only power lines, but also electric boxes and substations. When in doubt, kids should ask an adult for help and advice.
  • Go inside during a storm. Teach your children that if they are ever stuck in a storm, they should avoid trees and water, and should also kneel down (bending over with hands on knees). Never lie flat on the ground and seek shelter if possible.

Earth Day In Texas

Changing the world is hard work! Earth Day in Texas is just around the corner on April 22 and we wanted to share some easier ideas you may want to try out as you think about helping the environment and ways you can save money. A small effort over a single day may help you to decide what might really be a good fit for your lifestyle in the future. Here are some simple efforts you may want to try out:

earth day in texas 300x225 Earth Day In Texas

Earth Day In Texasare some simple efforts you may want to try out:

Think about your commute. Automobiles are some of the top polluters that each person has control of. Just changing your habits for one day can have an impact.

Replace your light bulbs. Start small by replacing a couple of your most used incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. CFLs last longer, give off less heat and use less energy.

Seal any drafts. Replacing weather-strips and caulk around your doors and windows saves money on your energy bill by reducing your energy consumption.

Save water. Try and turn off running water while shaving or brushing your teeth. Those few minutes of running water can really add up.

Cook outside. A benefit of grilling season is that it eliminates the use of indoor appliances.

Plant a tree. Whether you are celebrating Earth Day in Texas, or in another state, planting a tree will have a positive and long-lasting effect on the environment. Trees rid the air of carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen, helping us all to breathe easier. In addition, the roots act as a natural filtration system for water sources, and trees hold the soil in place, helping to prevent erosion and flooding.

Earth Day in Texas is a great time to think about the environment and the electric company you choose.

Choosing a Dependable Energy Company in Texas

Choosing an energy company in Texas is a right that Texas homeowners have had for over a decade. Since deregulation of the industry, Texans have enjoyed the same distribution and transmission systems they have always had, but now competition between companies means better service and lower prices. Of course, every company will present their own advantages, so how can a consumer make the best decision? When you are ready to choose an energy company in Texas, consider these tips:

  • Research each company before you make a decision. Do not go with the first company that comes along, but find out exactly what options are available before you make a decision.
  • Decide on what is important to you.Make a list of things that matter to you, like cost, 24/7 local customer service, green energy, surge protection, etc.,

and use this list to narrow the field.

  • Make sure the company you are considering is a licensed provider in good standing. You can confirm this by checking the Public Utility Commission of Texas website.
  • Understand the different services available. New technologies bring new types of services, so make sure you have assessed your personal needs and take advantage of options like mobile account service, eBill and free credit card payments.
  • Compare the rates of each local energy company in Texas. Understand the price per kWh, because the lower your price per kWh, the lower your electric bill will be. Ask about current market conditions, and look at both promotional rates and less risky long term fixed prices.
  • Know your company’s background. Working with an electricity supplier that also uses renewable energy sources may be a preference, and knowing the history of your company will give you a sense of its reputation. Do some online research, talk to friends who have used the company, and check with the Better Business Bureau to ensure your company has an A+ rating.  Look for strong financial backing by a Fortune 500 company.
  • Understand the terms of your agreement. Be clear on things like fees for calling customer service or paying with a credit card.  Be aware of any cancellation fees or term commitments .

Texas New Home Buying Checklist

Buying a home can sometimes be an overwhelming experience, and if you are looking for a home in Texas you might find it easier with a Texas new home buying checklist. Whether you want an existing home or new construction, there are some common tasks to complete in order to make the process go more smoothly, from shopping for a mortgage to looking for a Texas electric company. Here is a list to get you started:

Get pre-financed for a mortgage. The very first step in your Texas new home

Texas new home buyer checklist 300x225 Texas New Home Buying Checklist

Texas New Home Buying Checklist

buying checklist should be to secure preapproval, which involves finding the best rate, deciding on a type of mortgage and educating yourself on your credit score and which programs are available for you.
Make a Texas new home buying checklist of your own, detailing what is important to you in a new home. Neighborhood, square footage, schools and many other factors can play a role, but only you can make an accurate list of your priorities. Do some research to learn what is available, and get a general idea of what you want before you start to look.
Next, find a trustworthy real estate broker. You want an agent who understands your needs, and with whom you have good chemistry. Ask friends for recommendations, read reviews and find an agency with a reputation for honesty and good in-house resources. Your agent can help you find a home, negotiate price and handle all the details of the purchase.
Do your homework on possible properties. Be sure you know any zoning changes, property tax information or other restrictions.
Make sure to have a thorough home inspection. Have time written into your contract for the inspector to do a thorough job checking out your property before the sale goes through. Your inspection may open an opportunity to renegotiate the price of your home.

Once you have found your dream house, the Texas new home buying checklist will change to a different kind of to-do list.

In Texas, electric company choice is up to you. In some states, consumers do not have options, but Texans are lucky enough to make their own decision in the matter. The deregulation of electricity means that consumers have the same transmission and distribution they have always had, but companies have an incentive to compete, which can mean lower electric rates and better service.
Make sure to have your mail forwarded. The USPS has helpful kits to help you handle this detail. While you are thinking about mail delivery, update your magazine subscriptions and consider a newspaper subscription to help you get to know your new town.
Register your children for school. The sooner your kids can get into a new routine, the sooner they will feel settled. It is important for every member of your family to feel an ownership of your new home.
Get a new driver’s license and register your vehicle. This might be a good time to reassess your insurance needs, find a new doctor and register to vote.
Keep detailed records and receipts of your move. Make sure all your appliances and furniture is in good condition because insurance often has a window of opportunity for claims, after which you can lose money to which you were entitled. You will also need these receipts when you are doing your taxes.

With some careful planning, and this Texas new home buying checklist, your move can be a smooth transition. With Cirro Energy, your electric needs can be met just as easily.
